San Antonio. Authorities in San Antonio, Texas, found at least 46 people, presumed immigrants, dead and others in serious condition inside an abandoned trailer.
The KSAT television channel reported that the 18-wheeler was discovered in a wooded area near the train tracks in the Southwest Side neighborhood of San Antonio. Some local media reported that there would be between 12 and 16 survivors who were transferred to local hospitals, however the figures were not made official at press time.
Police vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances headed to the location where the trailer was found, between Quintana Road and Southwest Side.
The authorities are investigating the case and although the causes of death are not clear, its relationship with the effects of high temperatures is not ruled out, in addition to the fact that the discovery could be part of a human trafficking operation.
The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, reported that the nationalities of the victims are unknown.
“Tragedy in Texas. Reportedly suffocated in box of trailer. Consul en route to the point. Condolences to the victims and their families. We don’t know nationalities yet,” she wrote on Twitter.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott blamed President Joe Biden for the tragedy. “These deaths are on Biden. They are the result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law,” he said.
