They estimate that 67% of the LGBTI+ population in the country is between 15 and 29 years old

The LGBTI+ population in Mexico amounted to five million people, of this total more than half (67.5%) are between 15 and 29 years old, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

At the other extreme, people aged 50 and over represented 7.6% of the total, while individuals who make up the segment from 30 to 49 represented 24.8% of the five million.

According to the National Survey on Sexual and Gender Diversity (ENDISEG) 2021, the above data may be due to greater openness and self-recognition by the younger population.

“Now, of the total population with LGB+ sexual orientation, 51.7% self-identified as bisexual; 26.5%, as gay or homosexual; 10.6%, as a lesbian and 11.2% reported having another orientation”, referred to the survey.

On the other hand, the ENDISEG 2021 also investigated the self-identification of people according to their gender identity. Of the population aged 15 and over, 0.9% (909,000 people) identified as Trans+ (transgender, transsexual, non-binary, fluid gender, agender, among others).

Among other sociodemographic characteristics, it was indicated that 64.9% of the LGBTI+ population reported being single, 16.7% declared living in a free union and 13.9% reported being married. Similarly, 11.0% identified themselves as indigenous and 3.9% identified themselves as Afro-descendants.

“In terms of educational level, more than half of the LGBTI+ population (62.0%) has a high school level or higher. In contrast to the non-LGBTI+ population, the percentage that has these same educational levels is 46.4%,” the document reads.

Population by entity

The Inegi reported that the State of Mexico concentrates the largest volume of the LGBTI+ population, with 490,000 people aged 15 and over. This is followed by Mexico City with 311,000 people and Veracruz, with 308,000, Jalisco with 298,000 and Nuevo León with 286,000 individuals.

However, in proportion to its population in these age ranges, Colima presented the highest percentage, with 8.7%, followed by Yucatán and Querétaro, with 8.3 and 8.2%, respectively.

Social security and economy

With regard to medical care, according to Inegi data, 26.0% of the LGBTI+ population reported that they go to public institutions such as IMSS, ISSSTE, Pemex, Army or Navy.

Likewise, 19.4% said they attended Insabi (formerly Seguro Popular). “Note that almost half (49.8%) reported attending private hospitals or pharmacy offices.”

On the other hand, the ENDISEG 2021 detailed that according to economic activity, 64.3% of the population identified themselves as economically active; 35.7% as not economically active. The percentages with the non-LGBTI+ population are similar.
