They anticipate bitterness to appoint new INE directors

“It is better that they do not arrive, than that they arrive badly”, affirmed Marko Cortés Mendoza in reference to the appointment of four new advisers of the National Electoral Institute (INE), which the Chamber of Deputies must carry out before April 4 of the next year.

The national president of the PAN admitted that the announced rejection of the opposition in the Congress of the Union to the presidential initiative for constitutional reform in electoral matters could stall the negotiation with Morena and its allies from the PVEM and PT in the lower house and prevent the appointment of the successors of the electoral advisers Lorenzo Córdova Vianello, Ciro Murayama Rendón, Adriana Favela Herrera and José Ruiz Saldaña, who will have to conclude their constitutional term in April 2023.

“It could happen, but the INE can work with seven (counselors)”, he accepted, to a specific question about the possibility that given the impossibility of an agreement between the representatives of the opposition and Morena that guarantees the approval of the aforementioned appointments by the equivalent to two thirds of the federal deputies present on voting day, as established by the Constitution, there are no new appointments of electoral consultants.

“But isn’t that what Morena wants, at the end of the day?” Was the question.

“Well, but what we can do with the third (of federal deputies) that we have is (prevent) unpresentable profiles from arriving, or profiles that are going to submit to the government’s interest; that they are not going to act as referees and we are going to assert that weight that we have, in the search for the best profiles to arrive. It is better that they do not arrive, than that bad ones arrive, ”he replied.

It should be noted that the presidential proposal contemplates, among other issues, reducing the number of members of the INE from 11 to seven, as well as changing the name of the autonomous entity.

Cortés Mendoza assured that together with his PRI and PRD allies “we are going to take care of the electoral referee, we are going to take care of all the country’s democratic institutions; the counterweights and their members”.

And that includes, he said, the appointment of the next four electoral councilors, whose legal process will begin in September, as soon as the next period of ordinary sessions of the Lower House begins, when the working group that will issue the corresponding call will be formed. and will interview those interested in participating to be directors of the INE.
