There is no more serious evidence of omicron or that vaccines are not effective: WHO

There is no evidence that omicron causes a more serious disease than previous variants of the coronavirus or reasons “to doubt” the effectiveness of the vaccines against the new variant, a senior official from the WHO.

“We have very effective vaccines that have proven their power against all variants so far, in terms of severity of illness and hospitalization, and there is no reason to think that this will not be the case” in the case of omicron, explained the emergency director of the WHO, Michael Ryan.

“The general pattern that we are seeing so far does not show an increase in gravity. In fact, in some places in southern Africa milder symptoms are being registered, “said the doctor, echoing what the American scientist Anthony Fauci he had previously told AFP.

“You have to be very careful with the analysis” of these data, Ryan stressed however, recalling that the studies are still at an early stage, as the variant was detected in South Africa just on November 24.

Since that date, cases have been registered in about 40 countries.
