‘The worst of humanity’: the man who stabbed his girlfriend to death is jailed


The brother of Jennifer Poole, who was fatally stabbed seven times by her boyfriend in her Dublin flat, said her family is haunted by thoughts of what she endured that day and that she spent her last minutes on earth with “the worst of humanity”.

Jason Poole told the Central Criminal Court today: “No one deserves to die at the hands of another person for no reason.

“No one deserves to be treated the way Jennifer was treated.

“No one should think that they can control a person and make them feel useless.

“No one should feel fear or fear of another person.”

The sentencing judge, Judge Paul Burns, noted that this was “yet another case of a violent attack on a young mother by a male partner.”

The court also heard during today’s sentencing hearing that defendant Gavin Murphy, 30, has a prior conviction for assaulting a previous partner.

The court heard that the relationship between Jennifer and Murphy had continued difficulties in the months leading up to the fatal attack and that the decedent’s friend had observed injuries to the mother of two children in the week and day before her murder.

In a letter of apology to the Poole family that was read by his defense attorney in court today, Murphy said: “I know nothing I can say can ease the pain. Everyone knew and loved Jennifer. I feel”. for what I have done. I pleaded guilty to murder to show how sorry I am. He wanted to save everyone who loved Jennifer from having to go through a trial. I wanted to accept full responsibility, I will never forgive myself for what I did. made.”

Poole also said in her statement that her family has so many unanswered questions about why and how someone could take someone else’s life who was always there to help others who had a family and two “beautiful little boys.”

The testimony was heard as part of an emotional impact statement on the victim read today in Central Criminal Court, where Murphy was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence for murdering his girlfriend Jennifer Poole. The sentence was retroactive to April 17, 2021, when he was arrested.

Before sentencing the defendant, Judge Burns said: “This is yet another case of a violent attack on a young mother by a male partner, this case has fatal consequences for the deceased. Mrs. Poole was involved with the defendant for a year before her death and their relationship was described as having difficulties. Her family and friends noted injuries on Ms Poole before the fatal attack.”

The judge added: “The defendant appears to have a violent disposition, having previously been convicted of assault causing injury to a previous partner and his mother, where he drew a knife. He shows his readiness for violence against women.

“Ms Poole was stabbed seven times, her neighbor witnessed part of it and that must have been a harrowing experience for her. The victim impact statements were very eloquent, it is clear that Ms Poole was a good and caring person.” , a dedicated and respected mother in her community. Mrs Poole, 24, a mother of two, was stabbed to death in her first-floor apartment on Melville Drive, Finglas, north Dublin at around 2pm on April 17, 2021.

Neighbors raised the alarm and emergency services rushed to the scene before she was rushed to Connolly Hospital and died a short time later.

Previously, the court heard that Murphy has 13 prior convictions for use of a mobile phone while in custody, unlawful seizure of a vehicle, criminal damage, theft, production of an item in the course of a dispute, and two counts of assault. Causing damage.

Prosecutor Dean Kelly SC told the hearing that Ms. Poole’s young son was outside at the time of the fatal assault and could hear his mother’s cries for help.
