A study describes how the climate crisis will progress in the G20 countries based on the emissions generated in the coming decades
The future of the climate crisis is not yet written. The severity of this crisis, in fact, depends on how much temperatures rise from now until the end of the century. In the best of cases, if humanity manages to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, the consequences of this phenomenon will be limited. But if we continue on the current course, the planet could suffer an increase of between two and three degrees on average which, in turn, would lead to an exponential increase in droughts, floods and extreme weather events.
On the eve of the start of the Glasgow Climate Summit (COP26), a study by the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change describes how the progress of the climate crisis will affect the G20 countries; the richest in the world and those responsible for up to 75% of greenhouse gas emissions. As this analysis concludes, Europe could be exposed to extreme heat, an increase in the level of evil and great economic losses.
If the global rise in temperatures can be curbed, predictions suggest that the Europe’s gross domestic product it will fall less than 1.5% in 2050 and 1.8% in 2100.
More losses than in the pandemic
In a world of climatic extremes, Europe could lose more than 2% of its GDP in 2050 and more than 5% by the end of the century. It is estimated that the United States, India, Japan, South Africa and Canada will stand out as the most affected countries, with losses of between 10 and 13% of GDP.
LACK OF SOURCES

Exposed to water scarcity

Most extreme and deadly heat waves
Extreme global warming would raise the temperature by four to seven degrees in Europe before the end of the century. FLOODS AND RAINS

The impact of extreme weather events could increase by the end of the century.
DAMAGE ON THE COAST
Rising sea levels
If in the coming decades the advance of the climate crisis is halted, sea level in Europe will have ‘only’ risen an average of 18 centimeters by 2050 and from 38 centimeters for 2100. In the long term, this increase will cause damage in the areas most exposed to the sea.
Erosion of 10 meters per year

Even more fire risk
If Europe is exposed to extreme heat and prolonged droughts, fire risk could skyrocket by more than 10% in the coming decades. The area burned in forest fires each year could increase by 1,659 square kilometers per year between now and 2050, the equivalent to burning the entire city of London every year. Large fires could spread across southern and eastern European countries, from Spain to the Balkans and Poland.
It is estimated that around 2070, the fire season will have already been lengthened by at least 10%. The European fire boom will also bring an increase in greenhouse gases, which will further fuel the vicious cycle of global warming.
