The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) announced on Wednesday the addition of nine security cameras to its network, bringing the total number of cameras deployed to 42.

“The locations of the new urban security cameras were chosen following an analysis of the violent events that occurred on the territory of the metropolis”, indicated the SPVM, by press release.

The SPVM specifies that their purpose is to fight against crime, in particular armed violence. The captured images are recorded, and can be used in the context of police investigations. They can also be viewed in real time.

Neighborhood stations 7 (Saint-Laurent), 12 (Ville-Marie Ouest, Westmount), 26 (Côte-des-Neiges, Mont-Royal, Outremont), 27 (Ahunstic), 39 (Montréal-Nord), 42 ( Saint-Léonard), 44 (Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie), 45 (Rivière-des-Prairies) and 46 (Anjou) will be the recipients.

The Henri-Bourassa, Ferland, des Roseraies, Nelson-Mandela parks, as well as Cabot Square are particularly targeted.

The installation of the new cameras has already begun, and will continue during the month of March.

In October, during previous installations, the League of Rights and Freedoms (LDL) had denounced the measure, considering that the cameras infringe “unjustifiably on human rights such as the right to privacy and the right to equality”, and worrying that they could exacerbate racial profiling.
