The Spanish bishops celebrate the ruling on abortion in the US

Secretary General and Spokesperson for the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE), Luis Argüello, has welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court to revoke the constitutional right to abortion, which he considers “an encouragement to continue fighting”.

“The dominant culture makes the RIGHT to DECIDE the key to happiness and DEATH the solution to the problems that make it difficult for us. The US Supreme Court ruling that denies the constitutional right to abortion is a step in the right direction and an encouragement to continue fighting”, he assured on his Twitter account.

The ruling of the US Supreme Court revokes the Roe vs. Wade ruling that protected the right to abortion throughout the country and now leaves in the hands of each state the power to prohibit this right, something that several governors have already announced they will do.

The Vatican calls for “reflection”

The president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, has assured that the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States is “a powerful invitation to reflect together”.

“Faced with Western society that is losing its passion for life, this event is a powerful invitation to reflect together on the serious and urgent problem of human generativity and the conditions that make it possible; choosing life is at stake our responsibility for the future of humanity,” he told Europa Press.

The Pontifical Academy for Life has joined the United States bishops’ statement. “It is about developing political options that promote conditions of existence in favor of life without falling into a priori ideological positions. This also means ensuring adequate sexual education, guaranteeing health care accessible to all and preparing legislative measures to protect the family and motherhood, overcoming existing inequalities”, they point out.

For this reason, they consider that it is a time to heal wounds and repair social divisions, for reasoned reflection and civil dialogue and for unity to build a society and an economy that supports marriages and families, “and in the May every woman have the support and resources she needs to lovingly bring her child into this world.”

“heated debate”

Similarly, they stress that the Court’s ruling shows how the issue of abortion continues to spark a “heated debate.” “The fact that a great country with a long democratic tradition has changed its position on this issue also challenges the whole world. It is not fair that the problem is left aside without adequate global consideration. The protection and defense of human life It is not an issue that can be confined to the exercise of individual rights, but rather it is a matter of broad social significance”, they declare.

For all these reasons, they urge to reopen a non-ideological debate on the place that the protection of life occupies in a civil society to ask what type of coexistence and society is to be built. In the same way, they ask that “solid assistance be given to mothers, couples and the unborn child, involving the entire community, promoting the possibility that mothers with difficulties continue with the pregnancy and trust the child to those who can ensure its growth.
