The restoration of the La Sardana de Montjuïc monument is completed


The Barcelona’s town hall has finished the restoration the The Sardana monument on the mountain of Montjuic. The sculpture suffered a vandalism attack in October 2020. It is now back to its original appearance after fixing and integrating the repaired elements and the stone replicas made in the workshop.

The restoration has cost €28,500 and has been carried out by the sculptor Abel Vallhonesta. The eight figures of the monument to the sardana erected in 1965 on Montjuïc were mutilated the arms. It has consisted of repairing the two sets of original arms and hands that could be recovered and reproducing the other six sets that disappeared.

Based on the information extracted from a documentary and photographic search, several clay models were made in the workshop, as well as molds and plaster models to make stone replicas.

In recent weeks, all the elements have been fixed and integrated and the cracks have also been repaired, in addition to carrying out a superficial cleaning of the whole to standardize its appearance.

La Sardana is the work of the sculptor Josep Canaswas carried out in 1965 and inaugurated on March 19, 1966, and later a new square was built with the inscription “Barcelona a la colla sardanista Violetes del Bosc”.
