The Barcelona Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation for espionage allegedly commissioned in 2012 the then leader of the Catalan PP Alicia Sánchez Camacho to former commissioner José Manuel Villarejo about the current ‘conseller’ of Economy, Jaume Giró, when he was deputy general manager of CaixaBank. The decree to start the investigation proceedings was signed this Tuesday at noon and after the complaint filed in a personal capacity by the leader of Junts. In the event that the prosecution files a complaint, it is possible that the matter will end up in the Supreme Court, since the former leader of the Catalan PP is currently a senator and deputy in the Madrid Assembly.
In his complaint, Giró highlighted that, in November 2012, shortly before the regional elections, there was a meeting between Sánchez-Camacho and Villarejo where the former leader of the PPC allegedly provided data to the commissioner so that he could investigate the current minister, who was then deputy general manager of CaixaBank.
Giró maintains in his complaint, which has now led to the opening of an investigation by the Barecelona Prosecutor’s Office, that the alleged espionage would have occurred within the framework of Operation Catalonia, a police and political network to create alleged “false evidence that served to intimidate, extort and/or discredit people who, in one way or another, they considered close to the independence movement”. “As a result of the conversation, some type of monitoring or police control of his telephone communications could have been initiated against the person of Mr. Giró,” he details.
According to the conversations, which were revealed by “El Món”, Alicia Sánchez-Camacho urged the former commissioner to investigate Jaume Giró “but now” and, as Villarejo did not locate the victim, the leader of the Catalan PP explained to him that he worked in La Caixa and that he was a close friend of Pepe Antich, at that time director of ‘La Vanguardia’. A notation also appears in Villarejo’s agendas, although the commissioner writes “Siro” and not Giró, according to the documentation held by EL PERIÓDICO.

The complaint also points to an alleged “collusion” of high-ranking PP officials with the events, since in one of the audio fragments Villarejo refers to “María Dolores”, who the letter deduces is the former leader popular María Dolores de Cospedal, was aware of and referred to as “the boss” by Sánchez-Camacho.
