A judge in Martorell (Barcelona) has concluded that John McAfeecreator of the famous computer antivirus, committed suicide in his cell from the Barcelona prison of Can Brians, although the family has appealed to the Barcelona Court.
McAfee, who was 75 years old, was found dead in June 2021 in his cell at the Brians 2 prison, in Sant Esteve Sesrovires (Barcelona), the same day as the National audience communicated its decision to extradite him to the United States for alleged tax evasion.
A court in Martorell opened an investigation to determine the causes of death, before which the programmer’s family, who doubted that he had taken his own life, requested that a second autopsy on the bodywhich days later confirmed the suicide hypothesis.
According to judicial sources, the judge has concluded that McAfee committed suicide and has agreed to the case file, although the family has appealed this resolution before the Barcelona Court. The judge has also ruled that McAfee’s body, which remains in the mortuary in Barcelona, not be delivered to his next of kin until the appeal is resolved that the family has filed, according to sources.

The mortal remains of McAfee were transferred after his death to the mortuary of the Institute of Legal Medicine, in the City of Justice of Barcelona, and have remained since then in one of the fridges of the enclosure.
McAfee had been arrested in October 2020 at El Prat airport in Barcelona, when he was about to catch a flight to Istanbul and since then he has been in preventive detention. During the extradition hearing, the businessman, whose United States tax debt amounts to more than four million dollars, claimed to have paid “millions of dollars in taxes” and said he was victim of political persecution for having denounced corruption in the tax agency.
