The Government accepts a percentage of production in Catalan on all platforms

Progress in the negotiation on the audiovisual law and the role that Catalan should have on all broadcast platforms. After having closed, a month and a half ago, an agreement by which companies based in Spain had to have 6% of their catalog (produced, dubbed or subtitled) in the co-official languages, the new negotiation, derived from the fact that multinationals Like Netflix and HBO, they were out of that quota, it shows the first approximations. Thus sources close to the negotiating parties have explained to this newspaper that the Executive of Pedro Sánchez has offered to cut off part of the 5% destined for production, the most relevant for the economic sector, for the official languages. It would be 0.7%.

Government sources celebrate “the small step taken”, because production was something that the Government had always wanted to safeguard, but it sees that percentage “still far from what the sector is asking for”, which is for the quota to be greater than 1%.

In addition, the negotiating parties are agreeing to the allocation of aid funds for the dubbing and subtitling of audiovisual products. Something that also opens the door for multinationals, which have shown their willingness, to adopt those versions in Catalan that already exist. An example of a production already dubbed would be the once successful series ‘Breaking Bad’.

The negotiation is far from being concluded, according to the same sources, who recall, however, that the text must be ready before December 31, by mandate of the European Union.
