Alberta Premier Jason Kenney flipped his final pancake at the Premier’s Stampede Breakfast on Monday morning.

The breakfast is held annually, but the Calgary Stampede has been canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.

More than 250 people headed to the McDougall Center for a bite to eat on day 4 of the Calgary Stampede.

During the event, Kenney announced to the crowd that he will declare September 1 as “Alberta Day.”

“We are instituting a new annual tradition to celebrate this province in a big and beautiful way by declaring September 1, the day we joined the confederation, forever in the future as Alberta Day,” Kenney said.

“No wonder we celebrate Canada Day, it’s time we also celebrate this place we call home.”

In a press release, the Alberta government said celebrations will be held in both Edmonton and Calgary along with support given to other municipalities planning to host their own events. More details of exactly what the day will look like will be shared in the coming months, according to the press release.

In a subsequent media scrum, Kenney said the day will not be a legal holiday due to the proximity of Labor Day.

“Labor Day, depending on the year, can sometimes be right there. So, no, we already have a legal holiday… but it’s about taking a special day of the year, setting it aside and celebrating this province.”

Kenney also hinted at an announcement later this week regarding the construction of a factory that will be an “over a billion dollars” investment for the province.

Later this week, the Federation Council, which represents the premiers of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories, will meet in Victoria along with leaders of the National Indigenous Organizations, a collection of five national indigenous groups.
