Mr. Legault explains that it is because Mr. O’Toole has promised to respect the areas of provincial jurisdiction, mainly in health.
Judging by the performance of Quebec in health since the great socioeconomic summit of 1996, it is rather a field of incompetence that we should talk about. Due to centralizing reforms, chronic underinvestment, privatization and the fact that the bulk of investment has been concentrated in the hands of physicians, the public health and social services system has deteriorated to such an extent that we found ourselves in the middle of a pandemic with very few resources. This explains Quebec’s poor record when it comes to managing the pandemic.
Today, the network is in peril because many health professionals choose to leave the network every day. It is undoubtedly worth remembering that the last time the federal government made transfers worthy of the name in health, the government of Jean Charest used its sums to… lower taxes.
In the absence of a real political will to take the necessary decisions here, in Quebec, to sustainably improve our health system – namely to decentralize the network, to transform the method of remuneration of physicians, to set up an integrated public program of long-term care focusing on home support, democratize the management of establishments, eliminate the use of independent labor agencies, significantly improve working conditions in the network and give the environment the means to act effectively by prevention – Quebeckers should probably think twice before supporting Mr. O’Toole.
If nothing better, it would probably be better to bet on the Canada Health Act, which at least protected us against further privatization, and on national standards in the housing sector for the elderly, which are the main ones. victims of Quebec incompetence in health matters.
In my opinion, more and more Quebeckers do not care whether it is Quebec or Ottawa that is taking action to improve things in health. They simply want to see our political class take action, by listening to the stakeholders on the ground. That said, given Quebec’s poor record in this area, I believe that continuing to demand that we respect the areas of provincial jurisdiction in order to continue dismantling our public network will lead us straight into the wall.
