Two opposing manifestations about the embattled Coun. Sean Chu were held in Calgary on Saturday: the pro-Chu side gathered at Olympic Plaza while the anti-Chu group was outside City Hall.

Chu was attacked after a CBC News story, Posted days before the October civic election, alleging misconduct with a minor while he was an officer with the Calgary Police Service in 1997.

Chu won the District 4 seat by 100 votes, said he would not resign, and was sworn in for his second term as a councilor on October 25.

“We believe that, for the democratic process, if he is elected by the people, by an election, he should stay. He should have the same rights as other councilors, ”said Steven Jin, an organizer of the pro-Chu rally.

Steven Harding, a District 4 resident who participated in Chu’s resignation rally, said he voted for Chu in the past, but not this time.

“He was democratically elected under the wrong pretexts because the information came out a day or two too late,” he said.

The CBC News story ran on October 15; the municipal election was on October 18.

“Yes, [the alleged misconduct] I was twenty years ago, but it speaks of the character of the person and that is what worries me … That type of character does not change in 20 years, “he said.

“There is no way I should represent anyone.”

“He has been expelled from the two base committees, so I have no representation in the city and that is what bothers me.”

Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver previously said he does not have the authority under the Municipal Government Act to remove a duly elected council member.

Dueling rallies against Chu were also held in October.
