The National Court has provisionally suspended the delivery to the United States of the former head of Intelligence of the Government of Venezuela Hugo Carvajal, better known as The Carvajal Chicken, until the Ministry of the Interior resolves the asylum request requested by his defense.
As Europa Press has been able to confirm, the extradition is postponed until Interior is resolved the request presented by Carvajal.
Legal sources have explained that when raising this type of asylum before the department directed by Fernando Grande-Marlaska it is mandatory to suspend delivery. They have pointed out, however, that if the Interior denies the petition and Carvajal files an appeal against this decision before the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the National Court, the delivery to the United States would no longer be paralyzed.
Carvajal remains in prison after he was detained last week. He is sued for alleged drug and arms trafficking crimes, after his arrest late on Thursday in Madrid after spending almost two years on the run from Justice.
I had asked the Supreme court (TS) to suspend his extradition until next October this same court decides a pending appeal, in order to avoid what it sees as “irreversible damage.”
Carvajal is internationally claimed by the United States for a drug trafficking crime. He was initially arrested in 2019. Some time later he managed to escape and remained, until his arrest in Spain last week, in an unknown location.
