The clearing of the jungle continues in Quintana Roo for the Mayan Train tracks, despite an injunction

Cancun, QR. Despite the provisional suspension granted by a judge, the work of the mayan trainwhich imply the opening of a gap in the middle of the jungle, still continue west of Playa del Carmen.

This is what the environmental organizations that make up the Sélvame del Tren movement denounce, which have documented the clearing of the jungle with videos and photographs.

Robert Red, of Mayab Speleological Circlecommented that since there is a great opacity in the project, they do not know for sure if the clearing works belong to Section 5 south or north, however, it is a fact that the machinery has continued to clear large amounts of jungle during this same week in which the provisional suspension granted by a federal judge was announced, which orders to stop the works until the substantive resolution of the amparo lawsuit promoted by a group of speleologists is resolved.

“We do not know where Section 5 South begins, or where Section 5 North ends, and this is part of the same story. There is no clarity, there is no public information, it is very terrifying to see how things are being done, everything under the shadow, “explained the speleologist.

“I have no doubt that they will continue to do so, as they did in sections 1, 2 and 3, where despite an injunction they continued to work. That is the reality so far,” he added.

For his part, the industrial engineer, Guillermo D. Christy, a member of the Sélvame del Tren movement, assured that the clearing of the forest that has continued to be carried out corresponds to Section 5 south, which is the one that is suspended due to the protection granted since the Last Monday of this week.

The backhoes captured in images and videos show the clearing and felling heading south, from Avenida de los Gavilanes, to the west of Playa del Carmen.

Just last Tuesday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that they had not yet been notified of the provisional suspension ordering a stop to work on Section 5 south that runs from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.

“There is no official notification yet. We don’t know what it is. Only what is already in the public domain, there is a campaign against the Mayan Train financed by international organizations and by Mexican businessmen for political purposes, not environmental ones,” López Obrador pointed out during his morning conference on April 19.

“It may be that there are people concerned about the environment, but in general they are people without convictions, without moral scruples of any kind, because how does concern for the environment come out now? What was Calica doing?” he said.

“So, we are going to wait to see what they are claiming now and find a way to defend ourselves legally,” he added.

However, he also answered “yes” to the express question about whether the train continues, regardless of whether they will wait for the judge’s final decision.

Antecedent

Just in March of this year, the Fourth District Court granted the definitive suspension of the Environmental Impact Statement of sections 1, 2 and 3 of the Maya Train, corresponding to amparo 89/2021.

A few days later, the Collegiate Court on Labor and Administrative Matters in Yucatan He accepted having issued two contradictory judgments on the same matter, for which he annulled that judgment.

If they had prospered, sections 1, 2 and 3 would not only have been left without environmental impact authorization, but also without permits to change the use of forest land in 800 hectares of forest along 635 kilometers, which cross 25 municipalities. from Chiapas, Campeche, Tabasco and Yucatan.

The appeal was promoted by residents of these four states, alleging damage to the environment and their right to live in a healthy environment.

“The suspension entails the cessation of all work derived from such authorization, which implies deforestation or putting at risk native animal and plant species” highlighted the ruling that was ultimately rejected.
