TEPJF will create the Electoral Public Defender: Reyes Rodríguez

The president of the Electoral Court of the Judicial Power of the Federation (TEPJF), Reyes Rodríguez Mondragón, presented to the Internal Commission for Strengthening a proposal to reform the Regulations to transform the Electoral Public Defender for Indigenous Peoples and Communities (DPEPCI) in the Electoral Public Defender (DPE) and benefit from the services it offers to more groups in a situation of structural and historical disadvantage.

He said that the objective is to guarantee full access to electoral justice for members of groups in situations of vulnerability and with historical disadvantage.

He indicated that the new Electoral Public Defender it would focus on serving people from indigenous communities and peoples; women in cases of gender equality and political violence; people residing abroad, Afro-Mexican people; People with disabilities; people of sexual and gender diversity; as well as people in pretrial detention.

During a working tour of Campeche, Judge Rodríguez Mondragón gave the keynote speech “Inclusive democracy: Challenges for access to electoral justice”.

There he stated that the Electoral Public Defender provides for greater capacity to care for people from different discriminated groups; a broader catalog of services, not only representation and advice, but also guidance and mediation; and, above all, it would allow all Mexicans, regardless of their origin, gender or condition, to have access to authentic, free, prompt and expeditious electoral justice.

He highlighted that in TEPJF progress is made in favor of those who have been excluded from decision-making, and now must be the protagonists of a plural and inclusive democracy.

He considered that an inclusive democracy can only be built by eliminating the conditions of disadvantage that hinder the exercise of the rights of people due to their identity, ethnic origin, residence or social condition.

He said that the Electoral Public Defender would have technical and operational autonomy, as assistant to the Administration Commission of the TEPJF and it would also have a professional career service that favors merit, equal opportunities, a gender perspective, performance evaluation and ongoing training for defenders.

Regarding the head of the Ombudsman, he said that it is contemplated that the Administration Commission will be in charge of the selection process, based on a public, transparent and objective contest, through a call for people with the right skills.
