The principal of John Rennie High School, where the boy was a student, announced the death in a note to parents on Thursday.

“He was one of the students injured on Tuesday afternoon during an altercation that occurred between two groups of students near St. Thomas High School,” principal Jennifer Kurta wrote.

He died of his injuries in a hospital on Thursday morning, she said.

Kurta said student services teams have been deployed in John Rennie to support teachers as they deliver the news to students. Students are encouraged to stay at the school so staff can help them grieve, she said. Grief counselors and psychiatrists will also be at the school in the coming days.

A 16-year-old boy was charged Wednesday with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault as well as conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to assault someone in connection with Tuesday’s stabbing. I pleaded not guilty.

Two other suspects, aged 16 and 17, were arrested Tuesday night, and were released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

Police said while the victims and suspects knew each other, they were not known to police.
