Strong Winds Expected for South Shore of Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg Sunday – Winnipeg | The Canadian News

People near the southern shores of Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba are being told to prepare for the high winds that could hit the area Sunday.

The Manitoba Infrastructure Hydrological Forecast Center says strong winds could develop early in the morning and cause ice buildups around the southern Lake Manitoba basin and the shores of Gimli in the west and Victoria Beach in the east.

Northwest winds with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour throughout the day, along with the waves, could raise the water level by as much as five feet or more, he says.

Owners are encouraged to take precautions.

Cold weather preparations

Meanwhile, the government is advising people to be prepared for the cold weather that is expected to soon set in in the province.

The story continues below the ad.

Although anyone can be at risk if they do not dress properly, the province says older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, newcomers and the homeless are most at risk.

People are encouraged to communicate regularly with older neighbors, friends, and family, particularly those who are ill or living alone.

With the arrival of cold weather, the province says it is a good time to install a carbon monoxide detector and make sure combustion equipment is working properly.
