Strike at ArcelorMittal will affect the economy of Michoacán

Derived from the fact that the National Union of Mining, Metallurgical, Steel and Similar Workers of the Mexican Republic broke out the strike at the ArcelorMittal Mexico company, the company announced that it regrets the decision and that it could affect the economy of Michoacán and the metallurgical sector .

“ArcelorMittal México regrets this decision because, in addition to escalating the conflict, it will have an impact and serious consequences in the short, medium and long term on labor and economic stability in the Lázaro Cárdenas region, in the state of Michoacán, in the production chain. national and in the country’s economy,” the company reported.

The company explained to El Economista that the state government has participated in the negotiating tables with the union, where the task has been to jointly explore possible alternatives.

“ArcelorMittal México has always shown full willingness to engage in dialogue and collective bargaining, has one of the most generous and attractive collective bargaining agreements in the country, with the highest salaries and benefits in the industry, and has always provided security, dignity and well-being of its workers as a very high priority”, he deepened.

It should be noted that the strike breaks out in a context in which the state government seeks to detonate the state’s economic activity through the promotion of Lázaro Cárdenas, either as a pole to attract investment or a logistical detonator.

Among the actions that have been carried out to achieve this, the implementation of the Mexican Pacific Logistics Platform project stands out.

It is also added that this year the twinning between Silao and Lázaro Cárdenas was generated.

Conflict

According to the company, the conflict arises from the disagreement of the workers over the amounts that were covered on May 30 for profit sharing and which are equivalent to three months’ salary.

“Said payment was made in full and on time, as well as in strict compliance with the legal limit established in the Federal Labor Law. However, the workers have demanded amounts higher than the legal maximum, arguing that it is unconstitutional, an issue that is not up to the company to resolve,” he said.

Thus, considering the favorable results in the 2021 financial year, the granting of an additional single bonus, equivalent to six months’ salary, was offered at the negotiating tables, with which the total payment, adding the amounts already received by workers, it would be equivalent to nine months’ salary, that is, three times the legal limit.

“Unfortunately, the union has rejected this proposal and instead of favoring dialogue it has opted for the explosion. In this regard, we reiterate our full and wide openness and willingness to continue working at the negotiating tables. It is very important that with the will of both parties we reach an agreement”, stressed ArcelorMittal.
