The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) reported the arrest of José Artemio Maldonado Mejía, alias “The Michoacan” either “The Rabies”, one of the nine inmates who escaped in December of last year from a prison in Hidalgo.

The recaptured is the leader of the criminal organization “United Peoples in Michoacan”, and which is allegedly dedicated to fuel theft, among other crimes. He was arrested on Calle Arcos de Belén, on the corner of Luis Moya in the Doctores neighborhood in Mexico City.

His brother and collaborator Gerardo “N”, alias “Shrek”, who has an arrest warrant for kidnapping in Puebla, was also arrested.

The arrests were based on intelligence work, exchange of information and coordination of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the National Anti-kidnapping Coordination (Conase); the National Intelligence Fusion Center (CENFI) – Regional Intelligence Fusion Centers (CERFI) Center; the Attorney General’s Offices and Units Specialized in Combating Kidnapping of Hidalgo and Michoacán, as well as the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City.

The Michoacan” was a fugitive after his escape on December 1, 2021 from the Tula de Allende prison, Hidalgo, along with eight other inmates. To do this, criminals detonated four car bombs to enter the prison.

José Artemio Maldonado Mejía had already resumed his criminal activities, presumably leading cells of the criminal group Pueblos Unidos with struggles against the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) for territorial control, generating scenes of violence.
