Spitfires captures fifth straight overtime win over Greyhounds

A goal in overtime helped the Windsor Spitfires to their fifth straight victory Thursday, a thrilling 4-3 decision over Sault Ste. Greyhounds Marie.

The winning goal came within 24 seconds of overtime when Louka Henault finished off a two-on-one breakaway with a high shot past goalkeeper Tucker Tynan.

The Spitfires, following their home win at the WFCU Center, have extended their unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2-0), while the Greyhounds have also been on a streak, extending their unbeaten streak to five games ( 3 -0-2-0).

Both teams remained tied for first place in the Western Division with 30 points.

Henault’s goal capped a close game that saw the Spitfires jump to a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Matthew Maggio scored the first goal of the game just 1:41 into the game on a power play goal. That was followed by a second goal midway through the period when Daniel D’Amico at 10:14 hit the puck into the net after a pass from Henault.

The Greyhounds cut the lead to 2-1 at 8:33 in the second period when Robert Calisti’s shot from the spot went over the shoulder of Spits goalkeeper Kyle Downey for his 11th goal of the season. Calisti has already scored a goal in five consecutive games.

The Spitfires regained their two-goal lead at 9:34 in the second period when Spitfires top scorer Wyatt Johnston beat Greyhounds goalkeeper Tucker Tynan with a shot from mid-range.

Soo cut the lead to 3-2 at 1:51 PM of the second period when Tye Kartye scored his 22nd goal of the season when he pushed the puck past Downey during a fight in front of the net.

In the third period, the Greyhounds tied the game 3-3 with a power play goal at 5:33 in Marco Mignosa’s period. But the Spits prevailed in overtime.

Overall, Downey stopped 29 shots for the Spitfires in the win.

The Spitfires return to action on Friday in Saginaw, the last game before the Christmas break. The Spitfires’ next home game is Friday, December 31 at 2:05 pm against the Flint Firebirds.
