South Korea Seeks General Direction of ILO; propose to Kang Kyung-wha

Mexico City. Towards the renewal of the General Directorate of the International Labor Organization (ILO) for the elections in March 2022, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, Kang Kyung-wha, one of the five candidates for the position, visited Mexico on November 22 to present their proposals.

During his visit, he met with the Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare, Luisa María Alcalde, with whom he shared his proposals and, at the same time, listened to Mexican priorities in labor matters.

“As part of the change of address at the International Labor Organization, we received Dr. Kang Kyung-wha, one of the 5 applicants to preside over the organization,” the agency led by Luisa María Alcalde reported on Twitter.

“We appreciate your willingness to present your proposals to the government of Mexico and learn about our priorities in labor matters,” he added.

For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) reported on the same social network that the candidate also spoke with the undersecretary and Carmen Moreno Toscano.

“They talked about bilateral cooperation and the presentation of ideas to strengthen the International Labor Organization towards the future. Mexico will continue to listen to the candidates who have come forward, ”he said.

On October 1, former minister Kang Kyung-wha submitted her candidacy for the post of director general of the UN agency through the Permanent Mission of South Korea in Geneva.

If elected, Kang will be the first woman to become the head of the ILO.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry stressed that Kang has leadership, quality and competence to lead the main agendas of the ILO, such as recovering jobs in the post-coronavirus era, overcoming the economic crisis and spreading the spirit of mutual benefit and solidarity through trilateralism between unions. , employers and governments.

“The dialogue between governments, employers and employees within the ILO is currently at a standstill, therefore it is necessary to make efforts to reactivate communication and resolve key issues. In this sense, I will take the position of an impartial mediator, who will lead the unique tripartite structure of the ILO to a more effective dialogue ”, declared the applicant.

As part of his vision, he also highlights the importance of cooperating with various international financial institutions and regional development organizations, including the World Bank.

“It is time for the ILO to move away from the masculine and European and in this sense I, a woman and not a European, am the most suitable candidate.”
