Snow removal hitting Guelph after winter storm – Guelph | The Canadian News

Guelph’s snow removal teams are finishing their work after Monday’s winter storm that caused nearly 30 centimeters of snow to fall in the city.

Terry Dooling, the city’s manager of public works, said in an interview on Thursday that every street has been plowed at least once and the city’s sidewalks should be completed by 15:00 that afternoon.

Dooling said a storm like Monday’s does not occur very often.

“I would say this one is probably the first one we’ve had – to this degree of accumulation – in probably seven to 10 years. It’s not based on any historical research, but just from what I remember,” he said. .

The city has a fleet of 12 snow plows, 15 salt trucks and as many as 18 sidewalk plows.

Dooling said for this storm, all hands were on deck with teams working 24 hours a day before, during and after the storm.

“The amount of snow was tiring. “You have to climb into the plows to appreciate that kind of work, but it can be very challenging to keep the truck on the road and keep it straight with that heaviest snowfall,” he said.

Dooling said the work is for the most part almost finished, but there are a few spots still to be plowed and a few cul-de-sacs that need to be cleared.

Residents can fill out a service request form on the city’s website if they think their street needs extra work.

Teams also need to remove snow from downtown. That work is done overnight, starting Thursday at 11pm and again Monday, starting at 11pm

The city is asking drivers not to park their cars on the street while work in the city center is in progress. Municipal premises such as the Macdonell Street car park, the Market Parkade and the West Parkade are free from 18:00 to 08:00

It can also be noisy overnight while teams work, but the city said it appreciates patience and understanding from residents.
