Sentencing Hearing Today for New Brunswick Soldier Who Served Cannabis Cupcakes | The Canadian News

A sentencing hearing begins this morning for a New Brunswick soldier convicted of serving cannabis cupcakes to members of the Canadian Armed Forces during a 2018 live fire training exercise.

Bombardier Chelsea Cogswell was found guilty on nine counts after a court martial in August.

She was convicted of eight counts of administration of harmful substances and one count of disgraceful conduct.

Cogswell served the cupcakes to eight soldiers while operating a mobile field canteen on July 21, 2018, at Gagetown Canadian Fifth Division Support Base in New Brunswick.

Military Judge Cmdr. Sandra Sukstorf told the court that Cogswell’s actions were “shockingly unacceptable.”

She said people were driving trucks, setting up large howitzer cannons and handling ammunition while drunk, adding that the circumstances presented a potential for significant harm, including death.
