Senators elect Loretta Ortiz as new SCJN minister

The Senate of the Republic appointed Loretta Ortiz Ahlf as the new minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).

With 92 of 114 votes cast by the Plenary of the Senate, it was determined that Loretta Ortiz will fill the vacancy that will be left by Minister José Fernando Franco González Salas.

Ortiz Ahlf, who was nominated for the third time for this position, protested before the senators, in the plenary session on Tuesday, headed by the former Secretary of the Interior, Olga Sanchez Cordero.

It should be remembered that on November 16, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented to the Upper House the shortlist made up of Bernardo Bátiz Vázquez, Verónica de Gyvés Zárate and Loretta Ortiz Ahlf, to participate in the selection process of a new minister of the SCJN.



Who is Loretta Ortiz Ahlf?

Loretta Ortiz Ahlf has been a CJF advisor since November 20, 2019.

She has a degree in Law from the Escuela Libre de Derecho; member of the National System of Researchers Level III. She has a doctorate in Human Rights and European Community Law from the National Distance Education University of Spain and is a Master in Human Rights from the Ibero-American University.

He was a member of the Drafting Group of the Constitution of Mexico City between 2016 and 2017; Federal Deputy from September 2012 to 2015, Counselor of the National Human Rights Commission from 2002 to 2006, and Legal Counsel of the Environmental Cooperation Agreement of the North American Free Trade Agreement from 1996 to 2006.
