“There were definitely times when something bad could have happened because I turned around too quickly,” laughs Danielle Power of Sherwood Park. Confetti sweets, reflecting on their recent competitive baking season on Food Network Canada season 2 The Big Bake: Halloween Show. “There is a camera that literally follows you everywhere and they are often right above your shoulder when you try to decorate, bake or put something in and out of the oven. We competed with two other teams in our episode and each team had their set of cameras following their every move, so it was definitely something we had to think about. “

He partnered with Confetti Sweets baker Andrea Brousseau and Edmonton’s Cloud Cakes by Auntie Lou Honored Marilou after Honored was contacted via social media to audition for the show. Once they submitted their application and participated in some Zoom interviews, the trio were chosen to compete for the $ 10,000 prize and flew to Toronto for the few days of filming last February.

The show itself might have been stressful at some points, but Power could take comfort in the fact that she was familiar with her two teammates.

“Andrea and I have worked together for about four or five years, and Confetti Sweets has had a very good working relationship with Cloud Cakes for about three years,” says Power. “Cloud Cakes is in a former Confetti Sweets location on the west end of town. Marilou subleased it to us and turned it into her own bakery, so there has always been a little connection. My boss, Kathy Leskow, has been a kind of mentor to her. “

This isn’t the first time that Confetti Sweets has been in the news for its baking acumen. In 2015 and 2016, the company was invited to supply cookies for the Academy Awards, where they were served at a pre-Oscars party at the London West Hollywood Hotel. Leskow’s cookie empire has developed over the years; you can now find your Tinseltown approved products in supermarkets across the province.

Even with that kind of pedigree, the Power, Brousseau, and Honrado team had a lot of work to do when they found out they would be designing a Halloween-themed cake in no time.

“From the moment they say ‘Go ahead,’ you have five hours to build, design and bake your cake,” says Power, who competed against teams from Regina and Waterloo. “You just have to put your head down, plan and work. The actual theme for our episode was Love at First Fright, which we only discovered at the time. We knew in advance that logistics and organization were my forte, while keeping everyone on task, baking and pumping all the cakes was Andrea’s. The details and the very fine decorations, that was the Marilou area. We knew ahead of time what everyone was going to do in a sense, but it wasn’t until we got there and found out what we were doing that we were able to put those plans into motion. The first half hour to 45 minutes were tough, but then naturally we got into a rhythm. “

You can watch Power, Brousseau and Honrado fight their way through piles of sugar, flour and frosting this Monday, September 27 at 7pm, creating a unique treat that will last in your collective memories.

“They wanted big, they wanted big,” he laughs. “They wanted movement and light, and they also wanted a cake that was at least four and a half feet high and three feet wide. They specified that we needed what they called dynamic elements, something like a water fountain, fire, smoke machine, fireworks, something like that. Not only did we have to bake and design a cake, we also had to incorporate some non-food items in there. It was really crazy and a lot of fun. “
