Saratoga hotel explosion leaves 46 dead, after the death of another injured


A man who was hospitalized in critical condition died, bringing the dead add up to 46 as a result of the explosion of the Saratoga hotel in Havana, the Ministry of Public Health reported this Friday.

“So far, 46 deaths have been reported. The patient reported today was hospitalized, in critical condition, andat the Calixto Garcia Hospital“, Said the new balance of that entity this morning.

The death occurs when the country celebrates two days of official mourning decreed by President Miguel Díaz-Canel. Tonight there will be a vigil near the hotel that exploded a week ago due to a gas leak.

Nine adults and four children remain hospitalized, three and two respectively reported as critical. Another 40 people have been discharged from hospital since the tragedy occurred.

The emblematic five-star hotel, located on the busy Paseo del Prado in Old Havana, had been closed for two years due to the pandemic and was preparing to reopen to the public last Tuesday. Its first four floors were destroyed.

Built in 1880 and converted into a hotel in 1933the Saratoga was known to have hosted several celebrities in recent years, including Mick Jagger, Beyoncé and Madonna.
