Sánchez to ERC on the eve of the table: “The dialogue is going to be long, let’s not set deadlines”

The president of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, has attended this Tuesday the plenary session of the Senate on the eve of the dialogue table with the Govern of Catalonia with a message to ERC, party to which the president Pere Aragonès: “The dialogue is going to be long, let’s not set deadlines“.

Although the chief executive has not predicted a date, he has highlighted that “the political conflict”, as the Catalan separatists call it (and, for some time now, Sánchez himself), will not be resolved ” in two or four years “because” we have a long way to go “.

This is how the president responded when questioned by the separatist deputy Mirella Cortès, which has demanded “amnesty” and “self-determination” as conditions sine qua non to put an end to the “political conflict” and so that there is an understanding in the meeting that the Central Government and the regional government hold this Wednesday: “Tomorrow we have a historic opportunity. Time flies“.

Sánchez, who will not be present at the table but will share a coffee with Aragonès, has asked the representative of Esquerra Republicana to renounce “his maximum program”, in reference to “amnesty” and “self-determination”, inasmuch as the latter “is outside the Constitution and would further fracture Catalan society.”

In addition, in a speech atypically critical of the independence movement, he recalled that only “27% of the census voted for independentist formations” in the last elections, for which he has asked “to recognize those who do not want the referendum.” “Weren’t you the ones from the sit and talk?“, asked the president, who urged ERC to speak this Wednesday of” democratic memory, investments, European funds and a long etcetera “as a starting point.

This exchange of positions took place only 24 hours before the dialogue table resumed. A table where the President of the Government will not be, who will delegate to six ministers the meeting with a Catalan delegation that will foreseeably be represented by two counselors and Pere Aragonès himself.
