Sánchez imposes himself to maintain the negotiation with the Generalitat despite the “turbulence”

  • The president underlines the importance of building “societies without fractures” after the espionage crisis

The President of the Government used part of his speech during the closing of the Cercle d’Economia conference to try to rebuild the bridges with the Generalitat, very battered after the espionage of the CNI to the independence leaders. Pedro Sánchez’s words can be interpreted as a resounding declaration of intentions, of “principles” as he has said: does not intend to give up the dialogue and to the “negotiation” with Catalonia, despite the anger of the Government.

The president, who spoke with the head of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, for a few minutes before starting the act, wished to express his “profound respect for Catalan society and institutions”, and his “firm will” to “continue advancing in the negotiation, dialogue and agreement, because there is no nobler purpose for political leaders than to build coexistenceso that our citizens live in societies without fractures”. “The reunion policy is bearing fruitand this and no other is the roadmap of the Government of Spain”, he added shortly after.

It has not been the only moment in which the president’s speech has seemed an almost passionate appeal to Aragonès, who was listening to him in the audience, not to break relations with the Government. After ensuring that the “horizon” of the Government is that of the “legislature” -It is understood that in its original duration-, Sánchez has referred on several occasions to the “turbulence” that Spain and Europe have faced in recent years.

The “turbulence” of the legislature

He has specifically cited the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, but the list he has broken down seemed designed to remind the ‘president’ of the social achievements of the Spanish government. “The office of politics is today even more demanding, if possible. But the turbulence will pass, and what will endure will be Europe. And that Spain will have reached the highest level in employment. The minimum interprofessional salary will persist. The turbulence will end, and it will remain that our elders will have decent pensions. That and no other is our plan. Move forward, overcome obstacles, and achieve a clear goal: to provide the greatest number of people with a decent life,” he said.

Sánchez has also made a specific mention of the need to run away from “sterile confrontation” and to achieve the “maximum unity of action”. “And I would like to reaffirm it more than ever here in Barcelona”, she added, significantly.

On some other occasion, the President of the Government has winked at identity diversity. For example, when, addressing the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen -who was collecting the award for European Construction from the Cercle-, he referred to the EU project. “If I have one thing clear, it is that Europe is our new homeland, it is a new and complementary identity to many others, be it the Spanish homeland or the Catalan homeland“, has said.
