Samuel Girard and the Stanley Cup in Roberval this summer

Following the Colorado Avalanche’s victory in Game 6 of the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff final against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night, Roberval native Samuel Girard confirmed that he would bring the precious trophy back to his hometown.

The hockey player revealed the information while celebrating on the rink at Amalie Arena in Tampa, alongside his parents, Tony Girard and Guylaine Dion, who had made the trip for the occasion thanks to a chartered flight by the organization from Denver. Her sister and a cousin were also there, as well as her girlfriend. For the moment, we still do not know when the cut will be in the region.

The last five minutes, it was crazy, it was the longest five minutes of my life. It was sick! »

A quote from Tony Girard, father of defender Samuel Girard

This is the first time in the defenseman’s career that he has won the Stanley Cup.

Victim of a fractured sternum in the second round of the playoffs, against the Saint Louis Blues, Girard did not, however, participate in any game of the grand final. His playoff run ended after seven games during which he collected three points. His name will however be engraved on the trophy.

Samuel is extremely lucky to have his name on the cup and to have a ring. It’s an honor for him, he had a good season, good series at the start and to see him dressed as a player at the end with the Stanley Cup in his arms and kissing him, we were crying in the stands. We’ve never cried for joy like thisrecognized his father, Tony Girard, the day after the championship.

He and his partner slept very little since they participated in a rally organized by the Avalanche in the hours following the fifth game.

A first in 36 years

Tony Girard has promised a big party in the streets of Roberval to celebrate his son’s achievement. You have to go back to 1986 to identify a Stanley Cup winner from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. At the time, Almatois Mario Tremblay was part of the Montreal Canadiens’ champion roster.

Every player dreams of one day being drafted major junior, then it’s the National League. When a player arrives in the NHL, what he wants is the trophy. Whether you are dressed or you are not. He was injured and he was encouraging his team. When his team needed a little push, he kicked backillustrated his mother, Guylaine Dion.

Aged 24, Samuel Girard has just completed his fifth season in the NHL and his fourth in an Avalanche uniform. He is currently the only active player from the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region to play in the NHL.

The city of Roberval didn’t take long to celebrate the athlete’s coronation. A flag bearing the colors of the Avalanche was hoisted in front of the town hall. Mayor Serge Bergeron would like the Stanley Cup visit to coincide with the festivities surrounding the presentation of the Traversée du lac Saint-Jean.

We are so proud of Samuel Girard. Not only proud, but to see all the effervescence that there was around that. He is a son of Roberval and for us it is very importantmentioned the mayor.
