Mexico has become the world leader in avocado cultivation and exportation, contributing one out of every three avocados to the international market, being Michoacan the main exporting entity, hence the authorities of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), seek that a greater number of farmers have the certifications that allow them to export.

According to data from the agency, the main avocado export destination is the United States, but product is also sent to other markets such as Japan, Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, France, China, the United Kingdom, Honduras, South Korea and El Salvador, mainly.

In 2020 the production was 2 million 393,849 tons, in a sown area of 241,000 hectares and Michoacan it leads the largest national production, with a volume of 1 million 800,021 tons. Other entities that have participation are: Jalisco, Mexico state, Nayarit, Morelos and Guerrero, according to figures from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).

More than 60 countries in the world are producers of at least 500 varieties of avocado, the field of Mexico is the generator of the three varieties most appreciated by consumers: Hass, Creole and Strong.

The trade of this and other Mexican products to more than 160 countries in the world is possible thanks to the fact that they comply with the health and safety requirements imposed by each nation to which it is exported.

In this regard, the owner of Sader, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, announced that progress is being made in negotiations with the United States government to open avocado exports from Jalisco to the market of that country.

To do this, he has held meetings with the Secretary of Agriculture of the United States, Thomas Vilsack, who has shown interest in opening exports to the demand for avocado consumption in that nation.

“It is very likely that soon we will give the good news of the export of avocado from Jalisco, which will have an important impact for the state,” said Villalobos Arámbula.
