Royal Caribbean faces a drop in reservations due to the Omicron variant

The group Royal Caribbean It is facing a drop in cruise bookings and an increase in cancellations as Covid-19 cases spread in the United States, driven by the Omicron variant.

The cruise operator said the decline is not as severe as the crisis experienced during the wave caused by the delta variant at the beginning of last year.

Since Royal Caribbean restarted its cruise operations in the United States in June, the company’s cruise lines have carried 1.1 million passengers, with 1,745 people testing positive for Covid-19 and 41 hospitalized.

“Our case count has skyrocketed, but the severity level is significantly milder,” said Royal Caribbean Medical Director Calvin Johnson.

The company said that while travel for the second half of 2022 continues to be booked within historical ranges, booking factors in the first half of 2022 remain below historical levels.

Royal Caribbean also said it was experiencing service interruptions at some destinations and had canceled or “significantly modified” 16 of a total of 331 itineraries to date.

The company’s shares were up 1.5% in morning trading.
