Robertson, Dermott the odd men out for Maple Leafs as Spezza, Sandin draw back in

HAMILTON — Sheldon Keefe can’t fit everybody in for his team’s unique game on Sunday and that bugs him.

With veteran forward Jason Spezza and defenseman Rasmus Sandin returning to the Maple Leafs lineup for the Heritage Classic, the Leafs coach will scratch Nick Robertson and Travis Dermott.

Spezza was scratched in the previous two games and Sandin was out for three in a row after he was sick and then got caught up in the numbers game.

“Every decision you have to make is tough, but you have to make them,” Keefe said. “In Spezza’s case, whether we are playing outdoors or not, he needs to get back in the lineup. Sandin, we need to get him back going with our team. They are natural decisions for me. Robertson and Dermott have done a good job for us.

“In a game like this, maybe we should expand rosters so everybody (can play). It’s part of the deal, you can only dress 18 skaters, so that is the group we will go with.”
