Road worker badly injured in hit and run near La Fontaine tunnel

A road worker was seriously injured early Friday in a hit and run on northbound Highway 25 near the exit of the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel.

The Sûreté du Québec said the incident occurred around 1 am While the 56-year-old worker’s injuries are serious, he is expected to survive.

A safety perimeter comprised of several vehicles had been set up to slow traffic near the work site, however the driver of a compact car ignored the warnings and struck the worker before fleeing the scene, the SQ said.

The search for the driver was continuing Friday morning and investigators are attempting to obtain a detailed description of the vehicle.

A crime scene was set up at the site of the collision as an accident reconstruction team examined the area. The northbound lanes were reopened to traffic around 5 am
