Rise in COVID-19 cases in Estrie

After a lull, several indicators point to a resurgence of the COVID-19 virus in the Estrie region.

From Friday to Monday, there were 152 new people infected, bringing the number of active cases to 822. More than half of the cases, or 413, are in the Sherbrooke region. In total, public health authorities have identified 62 hospitalizations.

As PCR tests are only reserved for priority customers, these figures do not reflect the real situation, which would be even worse.

For example, in schools in the Sherbrooke region, the number of students positive for COVID-19 was 107 and 109 during the second and third weeks of March. That number has since more than doubled to 244 cases.

Another sign that does not lie, 340 CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS staff members were absent due to COVID-19 as of Monday. This is an increase of 70% compared to ten days ago.

If the situation in hospitals is more than viable at the moment, the authorities are monitoring the portrait closely.

Another source of public health concern: the decline in enthusiasm for vaccination within the population.

At the Familiprix pharmacy on rue King Est in Sherbrooke, the number of daily doses administered has gone from around sixty, a few months ago, to just a few.

People crossed on the street are aware that the sixth wave is knocking at the door. However, the situation does not seem to sow panic even if the BA.2 variant is even more contagious than the Omicron variant.
