Revision of the ILO Declaration will allow to dictate new commitments focused on working conditions

With the review of Declaration of the International Labor Organization (ILO), relative to the fundamental principles and rights at work that is carried out in the framework of the 110th session of the International Labor Conference, there is the possibility that its wording will change and it will become a fundamental (mandatory) convention for the countries members, especially when they face a series of accidents at work, which in the case of Mexico in 2020 was of the order of 300,000.

When consulted in this regard, the labor market specialist, José Pablo Hernández, explained that it is a transcendental issue, which had been postponed in its discussion, and that with the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Conference had placed it at the center of the discussion, since currently only 17 nations -out of 187 members- have signed the Convention 155 relative to the safe working conditionswhile in Latin America only Argentina Y The Savior They have signed it.

Hernández explained that the latest data published by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS of 2020) on accidents at work, mechanical forces (machinery) stand out in the first place; as second place falls, a good part of them also on motorcycles; and by Covid-19 110,000 were reported.

It is expected that this Monday there will be a discussion on the possible modification of the ILO Declaration dating from 1998, whose purpose is to include safe and healthy working conditions; this is a first discussion on learning, with a view to the possible creation of a new international labor standard.

In the event that an Agreement of this nature is adopted, the member countries will have to submit reports, and this will also allow knowing the progress of each nation; since aspects that emerge from the inspection are included.

Hernández said that the inspection in Mexico is worrying, given that there is not a sufficient number of inspectors; Despite the fact that there are all kinds of regulations, the issue is to verify that they are complied with, as is the case with NOM 035, on psychosocial risk factors in the workplace.
