Revalue the work of early childhood educators

Letter addressed to parents.

Hello, Daddy,

Hi Mom,

I am the educator of your child, the one who holds a technique in childhood education, a certificate in pedagogical support in daycare services, a certificate in psychosocial intervention and who is in the process of obtaining her baccalaureate in education. I have more than ten years of experience, which already places me at the bottom rung of the salary scale. Despite all these qualifications, my salary is not representative of the tasks and responsibilities involved in this profession.

Every morning, I’m the one who greets you with a smile. I am here for you, your family and your child, my ” coconut “. I inquire about his health, yours and your family, because even if it seems slightly futile to you, it allows me to adapt my interventions with your child. This allows me to create a relationship of trust with you and, thus, your child will feel safe. Thus, we will provide it with an environment that will allow it to develop harmoniously. The main task of an early childhood educator is to promote the harmonious development of your child. Thus, I make sure to put in place strategies that affect the areas of child development which are: physical and motor development, cognitive development, language development and social and emotional development.

For some time now, I have greeted you with a tired smile, because despite everything, the pandemic affects us a lot. Our related tasks are increasing, and so is the lack of recognition. We are there, despite the uncertainties and lots of difficulties. There are mornings when I wake up and just want to pull the blanket up and go back to bed. These mornings, I look at the pictures I sent you of your child, his smile, I remember his quirks, the times he needs to be reassured and I get up to be there. I also think of my colleagues who will have to work overtime, I think of the managers who will use strategies in order to hope to be able to replace me, but the reality is that they will not succeed, because there is a glaring lack of educators. Unfortunately, the lack of recognition, the pitiful conditions offered by my profession scare away educators. Those who remain in the network are at the end of their rope, without resources.

Upgrade the profession

Unfortunately, it is not a question of opening up new guard circles in order to grant new places which will resolve the crisis as the government claims, we must tackle the real problem, that of revalorizing this magnificent profession. Early childhood educators are the first professionals that our future generations will encounter. They play an important role in our society. By working hand in hand with all the actors who revolve around children, they allow parents to define themselves in their profession. In March 2020, the company stopped filming, parents were stuck with their children and failed to balance their responsibilities as employees and their roles as parents. The educators showed up and greeted you with a big smile despite the uncertainties. Wouldn’t it be asking too much to offer acceptable working conditions for the people who look after your cherubs?
