Remembering September 11: Halifax Airport Commemorates 20th Anniversary – Halifax | The Canadian News

The Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) is scheduled to commemorate the 20th anniversary of September 11 starting at 1 p.m.

Saturday marks two decades since the horrific kidnapping attacks that shook the world, killing nearly 3,000 people in what was the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil.

The commemorative event, which will be streamed live on this page, will feature representatives from the HIAA, the Nova Scotia Government and the US Consulate.
General Halifax, the Halifax Regional Municipality and the Canadian Red Cross, providing comments to highlight the importance of the anniversary.

On September 11, 2001, 40 planes were diverted to Halifax Stanfield International Airport as officials scrambled to clear the skies in the wake of attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon.

Halifax received more planes that day than any other airport in the world. In just a few hours, 8,000 passengers and crew arrived in the city.
