The search for Chelsea Poorman, a young Indigenous woman who disappeared back in 2020, has ended in tragedy after her remains were found outside a vacant home in Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighbourhood.
Police said contractors found the 24-year-old’s remains while working on a house near Granville Street and West 37th Avenue on April 22.
“This is not the outcome anyone wanted. We always hoped Chelsea would be found alive, and our sympathies go out to everyone who knew Chelsea, loved her, and hoped she would come home safely,” Sgt. Steve Addison said in a statement.
Authorities said a coroner’s investigation has already been completed, and police do not consider Poorman’s death suspicious.
In a news release, the Vancouver Police Department said investigators believe she “likely died on the property the night she disappeared or shortly thereafter, but went undiscovered because the house has been vacant for years.”
