Regina Police Deploy Driven Power Weapon During New Year’s Day Arrest – Regina | The Canadian News

Last weekend, the Regina Police Service (RPS) deployed a conducted energy weapon (DEC), commonly known as a Taser, in the arrest of a 50-year-old Regina man.

Police say that on Saturday, January 1, 2022, at 7:52 a.m., police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Garnet Street to assist Regina Fire and Protective Services.

“Preliminary information indicated that a man inside that place had a torch that activated the fire alarms, but it did not go out or allow firefighters to enter the facilities,” police said.

“The property owner let the police into the building. Officers found the man in an upstairs suite; the man was holding a knife and refused police orders to lower the weapon. The man approached the officers; an officer deployed the DEC or Taser. “

Police say the man was safely detained and a search for the suspect found two more knives tucked into his waist.

RPS charged Melvin Ross Longman, 50, of Regina, with assaulting a law enforcement officer with a weapon and possessing a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace.

Police say Longman made his first court appearance for these charges in Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2021.

RPS declares that the disclosure of this information is consistent with RPS ‘commitment, since 2013, to notify the public each time a taser gun is discharged at a person.

Police say the use of the DEC has been documented in accordance with policy and will be reviewed by the Regina Police Service Use of Force Committee. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
