Reader letter: Disappearance of farmland needs to be addressed

I went back to school 20 years ago for retraining.

While there I was required to do a paper for a social studies class. I chose the subject of rapidly disappearing farmland in Ontario.

While researching the paper, I learned some of the best agricultural land in the world right here in Ontario was disappearing at a rate of one square kilometer per day.

I am sure the rate of re-development of farmland has increased since then.

I would like to ask the powers that be, developers and Ministry of Agriculture: “Where do you plan on growing, sourcing the food necessary to help sustain populations of not just Ontario, but all of North America?”

What is your plan in 10 years from now or 20 years?

The loss of this land needs to be curtailed and administered more wisely or you may only be adding to this dilemma of climate change and host of other problems we are also failing to deal with.
