An initial leaked draft majority opinion suggests the US Supreme Court is poised to overturn the Roe v. Wade legalizing abortion nationwide, Politico reported Monday.

The unprecedented leak surprised Washington. It has the potential to reshape the political landscape ahead of the US midterm elections in November.

The following is the reaction to the report:

INDEPENDENT UNITED STATES SENATOR BERNIE SANDERS:

“Congress must pass legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade as the law of the land in this country RIGHT NOW. And if there are not 60 votes in the Senate to do it, and there are not, we have to end the obstructionism to approve it with 50 votes.”

FORMER UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON:

“This decision is a direct attack on the dignity, rights and lives of women, not to mention decades of established law. It will kill and subjugate women even when the vast majority of Americans think abortion should be legal. What an absolute shame.

DEMOCRATIC SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN:

“An extremist Supreme Court is about to strike down #RoeVWade and impose its unpopular far-right views across the country. It’s time for the millions who support the Constitution and abortion rights to stand up and make their voices heard. We are not going back, ever again.”

DEMOCRATIC SENATOR AMY KLOBUCHAR:

“If nothing can be done in Washington because of Republican filibuster, then the American people and women are going to have to vote and people who believe in choice are going to have to vote like never before, because that is the only way we can change this. .”

“What you’re going to see is a discussion of this in real terms like we’ve never seen before: back-alley abortions, people having to take buses to other states, people who can’t … make their own economic decisions.”

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK KATHY HOCHUL:

“This is an absolutely shameful attack on our fundamental right to choose, and we will fight it with everything we have. Let me be loud and clear: New York will always guarantee your right to abortion. You have our word.

REPUBLICAN SENATOR TOM COTTON:

“The Supreme Court and the Department of Justice must get to the bottom of this leak immediately using all necessary investigative tools. Meanwhile, Roe was terribly wrong from the start and I pray that the Court will follow the Constitution and allow the states to once again protect unborn life.”

REPUBLICAN SENATOR RICK SCOTT:

“The Supreme Court’s confidential deliberation process is sacred and protects it from political interference. This violation shows that radical Democrats are working even harder to intimidate and undermine the Court. It was always his plan. Judges cannot be swayed by this attack.”

REPUBLICAN SENATOR JOSH HAWLEY:

“The left continues its assault on the Supreme Court with an unprecedented breach of confidentiality, clearly intended to intimidate. The Magistrates must not give in to this attempt to corrupt the process. Stay strong.”

“I will say, if this is the opinion of the Court, it is a great opinion. Voluminously researched, strongly argued, and morally powerful.”

DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE AND SENATE CANDIDATE TIM RYAN

“Revoking Roe would be absolutely wrong. Not to mention catastrophic for Ohio, where Republicans have put forward one extreme proposal after another to ban abortion before most women know they’re pregnant. We must fight back. The most fundamental rights of Ohioans are at stake.”

DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ:

“As we have warned, SCOTUS is not just coming for abortion, but for the right to privacy that Roe is based on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights. Manchin is blocking the codification of Roe by Congress. House has apparently forgotten about Clarence Thomas. These 2 points must change.”

NATIONAL WOMEN’S LAW CENTER:

“The language of the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion is outrageous, irresponsible and shocking. Any judge who signs this opinion is fueling the harm and violence that will happen to people who get pregnant in this country.”

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION:

“If the Supreme Court does issue a majority opinion along the lines of Justice Alito’s leaked draft, the shift in the tectonic plates of abortion rights will be as significant as any opinion the Court has issued.” (Compiled by Kanishka Singh in Washington)
