Ratification of Victoria Rodríguez Ceja as a member of Banxico progresses

The Finance and Public Credit Commission, of the Senate of the Republic, approved this Thursday the opinion for Victoria Rodríguez Ceja to become a member of the Governing Board of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).

With 14 votes in favor and six against, the legislators approved the profile so that Rodríguez Ceja, who comes from the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), be a member of the board, after the president Andrés Manuel López Obrador indicate his intention to appoint her as the next governor of the central institution.

The approved opinion turns to the plenary session of the Upper House and it is expected that this same day it will be voted on.

After yesterday the still undersecretary of Expenditures appeared commissions, the opposition legislators and who are members of the Finance and Public Credit CommissionThey criticized that the official does not have the “recognized experience in monetary policy” required by law.

She has the profile to be a member, although she does not meet the requirements of the law… she does not have the necessary experience to be a governor, ”said Senator Gustavo Madero.

The Morenoist senators stressed that the approved opinion is to approve Victoria Rodriguez Ceja as a member of the Governing Board of Banxico, but not as governor; However, they recalled that the Federal Executive may appoint any of the deputy governors who are within the Governing Board as governor.

In this sense, the PAN Senator Víctor Oswaldo Fuentes He stressed that there is a clear lack of communication, because at the beginning it was always said that Rodríguez Ceja would be governor but, in the office that the Presidency sent to the Senate, he proposed only as a member of Banxico.

“What confuses us, and I hope it does not drastically confuse the markets, is the lack of communication in the cabinet. One day after the office of the President of the Republic, the Office of the Interior arrives where it is established that the proposal is submitted for discussion as a member of the Governing Board and governor of Banxico. That lack of communication leaves a lot to be desired. I think an institutional clarification is worthwhile ”, he asserted.

In this sense, Alejandro Armenta Mier, from Morena, made it clear that the commission is only voting on the ratification of the proposal for Rodríguez Ceja to be a member of the Governing Board of the central institution.

“What happens next is not the responsibility of the Senate of the Republic,” he said.
