Queretaro’s construction industry sees a difficult start to 2022 due to less public and private works

Querétaro, Qro. The construction industry broke in October 2021 the streak of annual growth that it had maintained since November 2020.

In October of the year ended, the production value of construction in the entity experienced an annual decrease of 19.1%, according to the National Survey of Construction Companies (ENEC).

Prior to this fall, the industry accumulated 11 consecutive months with annual growth, from November 2020 to September 2021, according to the survey records of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Before resuming the rhythm of annual growth, the local industry added 15 months with annual falls, from August 2019 to October 2020, later the streak of 11 months of growth began.

The decrease in October 2021 is related to the fall of both public and private works; Although the private sector has more weight within the production value of the industry in the state, the public works showed a more pronounced annual decrease during October.

In October of the year ended, public works decreased 54.2% annually, accumulating five months with negative variations, since June (-43.2%), as well as in July (-52.4%), August (-16.1%), September (-28.2 %) and October.

Private works decreased 1.6% in October, breaking the streak of nine consecutive months of growth, in January 2021 (39.5%), as well as in February (19.9%), March (15.7%), April (23.8%), May (25.8%), June (42.6%), July (30%), August (20.5%) and September (24.4%).

From January to October 2021, the production value generated by the companies in the entity presented a growth of 11% compared to the same period of the previous year. However, in January-October 2020 it showed a fall of 30.7% in relation to the value of 2019.

Public works, from January to October 2021, fell 20.6% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, in the year of the pandemic it grew 17.3% in relation to the previous period. It should be noted that the accumulated value in 2021 is lower than in 2019.

Private work grew 23.4% from January to October 2021, compared to 2020; however, in 2020 it fell 40.2%; therefore, the 2021 results are still below the pre-pandemic production value.

Only the production value from January to October 2021 is made up of 79.9% of private work and only 20.1% corresponds to public work.

On average, each year the private work contributes 75% of the production value in the construction industry and 25% of the public sector, exposes the Economic Yearbook 2021, of the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (Sedesu).

At the end of 2020, the document states, the construction industry reported 47,945 insured workers, a figure that represented 8% of the total formal jobs generated in the state.

From 2015 to 2019, the Gross Domestic Product of this industry grew 37% and its physical volume index 26.3%, according to information presented by the state agency.
