Querétaro plans to increase the value of its food production by 52%

Queretaro, Qro. The state administration (2021-2027) plans to increase the value of food production in the state by 52%. Therefore, it is estimated that this annual value will advance from 25,000 million pesos to 38,000 million pesos at the end of the administration, explained the Secretary of Agricultural Development (Sedea), Rosendo Anaya Aguilar.

This objective, he explained, goes hand in hand with the strategy of technification of the field; therefore, there is also the objective of incorporating 15,000 technified hectares, with the purpose of doubling the current surface.

“The objective is that the administration raises the value of production by 50% and technology must be bet on (…) They have planned to continue technifying, taking technification at different points,” he explained.

In this context, Querétaro stands out for its performance in the productivity of protected agriculture, explained the member of the advisory council of GreenTech Americas, Homero Ontiveros.

He added that while the state ranks between 15th and 16th nationally in terms of protected agricultural area, it is between seventh and eighth in terms of production. Therefore, the Bajío region is the productive area with the highest technology in Mexico.

“Because it is producing more high technology, given its geographical region, its climate and the fact that another type of technology is required. And in a smaller number (area) it has much higher productivity (Querétaro) ”, he explained.

He stressed that various producers seek to increase their productivity through the use of technology. Meanwhile, a next stage is to increase productivity by using fewer resources.

Therefore, he stressed that one of the objectives of protected agriculture is to increase its efficiency in the use of resources, due to problems such as water scarcity.

“Increase productivity with less, with less water, use sensors, understand the plant much better to know what it needs and when it needs it, to increase its productivity,” he explained.

During the first quarter of the year, the state of Querétaro reported an annual growth of 11% in the value of the food industry, generating more than 22,000 formal jobs. In 2021 it closed with a growth of 12% per year, said the Secretary of Sustainable Development (Sedesu), Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero.

In this context, the second edition of GreenTech Americas was announced, a global platform for protected horticulture that will take place at the Querétaro Congress Center, from April 27 to 29.

The General Director of Tarsus Mexico, José Navarro Meneses, reported that 170 national and international companies will be present, as well as more than 250 brands from various countries.

During the three days, the aim is to establish profitable business relationships, exchange ideas and discover opportunities in the region for horticultural technology.
