Querétaro Airport, with a 30.3% lag in passenger movement


Queretaro, Qro. The Queretaro International Airport (AIQ) mobilized 64,647 passengers in the first two months of the year, still 30.3% below the 92,786 arrivals reported in the same period of 2020, before the covid-19 pandemicexpose records of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).

However, in relation to the first two months of 2021, when 37,982 travelers were reported, the AIQ registers an annual increase of 70.2%, specifies the federal agency.

Regarding the arrival of passengers on domestic flights, in the first two months of the current year, the AIQ mobilized 45,240 travelers, a decrease of 33.7% compared to the same period in 2020, when the figure amounted to 68,265 passengers.

In contrast, the figure for this year represents an increase of 57% in relation to the first two months of 2021, when there were 28,813 passengers.

Regarding the arrival of international travelers, in the period January-February 2022 there were 19,407 passengers on international flights, a figure that maintains a drop of 20.9% compared to the same period in 2020, when 24,521 people were mobilized.

In relation to a year ago, when 9,169 people were mobilized in the January-February period, this first two-month period of 2022 reports an annual increase of 111.7%.

Regarding the total arrival of flights, in the first two months of the year the AIQ registered 1,103 flights, an indicator that is 35.5% below the same period of 2020, when they added 1,709 flights. Regarding the first two months of 2021, when 830 flights were reported, there is an annual increase of 32.9% per year.

The arrival of domestic flights added 725 operations in the first two months of the current year, a drop of 43.4% compared to 1,281 in the same period of 2020; meanwhile, it is 30.6% higher in relation to the 555 registered in 2021.

In relation to the arrival of international flights, in the recent January-February period they added 378 flights, which implied a drop of 11.7% compared to 428 in 2020; as well as an increase of 37.5% compared to 275 for the same period in 2021.

Impact of Covid-19

According to estimates from the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (Headquarters), it is expected that by the end of 2022 the AIQ will mobilize around 1 million travelers, that is, it would still present a lag of 16.6% in relation to 2019 when it added 1 million 200,000 travelers.

Meanwhile, concluding the year with 1 million travelers would mean reaching nearly 50% of the airport’s total capacity, which is 2 million passengers.

Given the global impact of the pandemic, during 2020 the AIQ transported 509,098 passengers, which represented a reduction of 57.3% compared to 2019, exposes the Querétaro Competitive Yearbook 2021issued by Sedesu.

According to the document, as a result of the impact of the pandemic, the Querétaro airport went from position 19 to 22, among 59 airports in the country, in terms of passengers transported.
