Faced with a growing number of COVID-19 cases and a healthcare system poised to break down, Quebec Prime Minister François Legault is expected to announce the reimposition of a province-wide curfew, La Presse reported Thursday.

The curfew will go into effect on Friday, New Year’s Eve, and will last for three weeks, according to anonymous sources cited by La Presse.

The Legault government imposed a curfew in early 2021. The prime minister was hesitant to reactivate it, but Health Minister Christian Dubé, the prime minister’s chief of staff and health officials are in favor of the measure.

While no firm schedule had been set for the curfew on Wednesday, officials are considering a closure from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The report says the province is considering closing restaurants because the outbreaks are among staff rather than customers. A further reduction in the number of people attending a social gathering is also being considered, which has already dropped to six as of December 26.
