Quebec starts the new year with more than 17,000 new cases of COVID-19

With 27,740 third doses of vaccine administered on Friday, 17 percent of the population five years and older have received a booster shot.

Quebec reported a record 17,122 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday and eight additional deaths.

The number of hospitalizations for the virus also continued to rise, from 98 to a total of 1,161. Of those patients, 153 are in intensive care, an increase of two.

As of Saturday, Quebec said its hospital capacity for COVID-19 patients stood at 1,252 for those who do not require intensive care and 319 for those who do.

In a tweet, Health Minister Christian Dubé said: “My father, a boat captain, used to say that in rough seas you have to keep the bow of the boat in the wind to fight the wave. Even if many are dizzy, you should keep your spirits up. Good weather always returns. Happy New Year 2022 everyone! “

After taking 58,453 tests on Friday, the positivity rate in Quebec is 31 percent.

Regarding vaccination, the rate remains the same: 89% of people aged five years and older have received one dose and 82% have been vaccinated twice. With 27,740 third doses administered in the previous 24 hours, 17 percent of the population over the age of five have received a booster shot.

On Friday, the Montreal City Executive Committee renewed the island-wide state of emergency for another five days.
